AUTUMN IN MONOCHROME

Whilst Autumn is known for its wonderful colour palette of vibrant yellows, oranges and reds, I dedicated my Autumn of 2019 to capturing it exclusively in Black and White. The series focuses on the landscape of the woodland interior - the only visible skies are captured in the reflections of water - with textures, patterns, and intimate scenes all playing a major part alongside the images of the wider woodland.

A selection of the series, along with an article about the project came together, was published in Issue 204 of OnLandscape. You can read the full feature here

INTERIORS

For this particular project, I decided to focus on the woodland interior and omit the sky from all of the images. The only sky is visible in the reflections of water. However, the images are not dark and oppressive; the leaves glow with light and in places the sun bursts through the thick tree canopies to show us the way.

CLOSE UPS

Shooting a series of closeup or detail shots really helps you explore the textures of woodland; whether it’s the different types of leaves or bark from a fallen tree, there is always something to be found when you look a little closer.

TRIPTYCHS

Triptychs are a device I frequently use to display images to help tell the story in a way that a single image by itself cannot do. This is often the case with small, more intimate snippets of the landscape, that I find work well grouped into a mini series.
